Rotman School of Management, EY Room (151), 6:30 – 7:30 pm Click here to registerMonday September 25, 2023 Professor Jan Mahrt-Smith will discuss how ESG considerations, including climate, affect valuation. Jan teaches Corporate Finance and Sustainable Finance to Undergraduate, MBA, and PhD students. He has won several of Rotman’s top teaching prizes – both from the Dean’s Office and as voted by the students. He has also developed and delivered executive education modules and provided consulting services to Bruce Power, Citigroup, Corus Entertainment, Scotiabank, and TD. Professor Mahrt-Smith received a BSc in Business Administration from Boston University and a PhD in Financial Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Monday October 2, 2023 Professor Steve Easterbrook will discuss the science behind climate change and strategies for modelling potential impacts. Steve studies the development of computational models for understanding climate change, along with the role of models and data visualizations for sharing that knowledge about climate and sustainability with other communities. Steve teaches courses on Systems Thinking, Climate Literacy, and Software Design. Drawing on his extensive visits to the world's top climate research labs, his most recent accessible, non-technical book, Computing the Climate: How We Know What We Know About Climate Change, shows how computer models help to build a more complete picture of Earth's climate system. Professor Easterbrook received his Ph.D. from Imperial College, London. Monday October 16, 2023 Jane oversees BNP PARIBAS’ ambitious approach to sustainable investment and will discuss the firm’s commitment to climate action and net-zero roadmap in the context of a shifting global investment landscape. She is an active participant in a number of key industry initiatives, including as a member of the FSB Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, a Trustee of CDP, and a member of the PRI Academic Working Group. Prior to her current role, Jane spent 18 years with global investment consultancy Mercer, where she was Partner and founder of the firm’s Responsible Investment business. In 2005, she was appointed as consultant to the United Nations on the development of the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). A Research Affiliate at the University Oxford Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, Jane regularly researches, writes and speaks on topics addressing the intersection of sustainability and climate with finance and investment. Jane holds a Master of Social Science from the University of Amsterdam and a Bachelor of Economics and English from York University. Monday October 23, 2023 Judy leads ONEX’s ESG efforts across all of its platforms and will discuss the rapidly evolving climate and sustainability reporting frameworks, the type of decision-useful information investors require, and how ONEX manages its own reporting in its fundraising efforts. She works with ONEX’s investors and clients to align the firm with industry best-practices by integrating ESG factors into its investment processes and ongoing reporting. Judy is also a director of Gibson Energy and PowerSchool. Prior to joining ONEX, Judy was CEO of ESG Global Advisors, a firm she founded to bridge the gap between companies and investors on ESG. Previously, she was Head of Corporate Governance & Responsible Investment at RBC Global Asset Management. Judy has a Masters in Law from Osgoode Hall Law School and a law degree from the University of Toronto Law School. Monday October 30, 2023 Sandra will discuss the challenges facing Canada’s economy, the crucial role entrepreneurship plays in its future prosperity, and how BDC’s bold ambitions are poised to help. A trailblazer in sustainable finance, Sandra is leading all facets of BDC’s sustainability and ESG strategy and programs, including the bank’s renewed and enhanced focus on the environment as well as its diversity, equity and inclusion strategy. A respected and well-known voice in promoting sustainability and clean capitalism in Canada, Sandra has previously led enterprise-wide sustainability, community investment and social finance programs and strategies at Scotiabank and RBC. Sandra holds a Master of Applied Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto and is a CFA charter holder.
